What is Sodium Lactate?
Sodium lactate is the sodium salt produced from quality bio-fermented, natural Lactic Acid, usually derived from from corn or beets. The fermented compound is then diluted with water creating a nearly colourless, viscous liquid that is VEGAN FRIENDLY. [Read More: The Derm Review]
Benefits of Sodium Lactate For Skin
A vegan super hydrator derived from lactic acid (a natural AHA). Sodium lactate is versatile skincare and cosmetic ingredient. This extremely high-performance active emollient binds to moisture to increase the water content of the skin. It is an important ingredient for maintaining hydrated skin that is soft and supple, and for anti-aging care.
Sodium Lactate is an All-Star Moisturizer
Emollients cover the skin with a protective film to trap in moisture. Emollients are often used to help manage dry, itchy or scaly skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and ichthyosis. Sodium lactate soothes and hydrates by drawing moisture into the skin, making it one of the best face moisturizers for dry skin.
Sodium lactate is essential for a healthy skin microbiome and NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor)
Since Sodium lactate is a natural component of the epidermis (top layers of skin), it’s a vital part of your skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). The NMF is made up of electrolytes, sugars, and amino acids, as well as sodium lactate that all work together to protect the skin’s surface and keep it healthy and hydrated. The NMF deplets as we age so replenishing it with key active ingredients like sodium lacate, can help to preserve elasticity, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and keep skin smooth and supple. Sodium Lactate has anti-microbial properties and balances pH
The skin’s normal pH is slightly acidic, typically between 4.75 and 5.5. It’s important for skincare products to fall into that range, to ensure they don’t irritate the skin or deplete essential oils and lipids making the skin more susceptible to acne or other issues. While not effective as a preservative on it’s own, sodium lactate has anti-microbial properties that prevent bacteria from reproducing, so it can amplify the efficacy of natural and synthetic broad spectrum preservatives.
